All About Annette
Hello! My name is Annette Johnston and I am thrilled to be serving at Bethesda Elementary School as Assistant Principal. Prior to becoming Assistant Principal at Bethesda, I served at the 6th Grade Administrator at Neal Magnet Middle School in Durham, NC.
Originally, I grew up in Clarion, Pennsylvania (about 75 miles north of Pittsburgh - Go Steelers!) I moved to Durham 7 years ago and now consider Durham my home. I am a 4th generation teacher. My great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, and father were all teachers along with numerous aunts and uncles. Additionally, I am engaged to my fiancé , Tim, and we are planning a July 2018 wedding!
I graduated in 2011 from Clarion University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education. Currently, I am attending North Carolina State University (NCSU) as a member of the Durham Principal Leadership Academy (DPLA). DPLA is part of the larger work of increasing student achievement by preparing principals in high-poverty, hard-to-staff, and historically low-performing schools and I feel honored to be a member of the cohort.
Throughout the past 6 years, I have been working as a teacher and in various educational leadership positions. I am certified in Elementary Education (K-5), Middle School Math (6-9), and Middle School Language Arts (6-9). My most recent teaching experience has been with upper elementary students in grades 3-5 at Bethesda Elementary School. For the last two years, I have served as a member of the Instructional Leadership Team at Bethesda and I have had various leadership roles within my building including Academic Coach, Math Task Force Lead, Testing Coordinator, AdvancED Accreditation Contact, Read to Achieve Facilitator, and Member of the Truancy Court Team, CERT Team, and SIT Team.
I chose to become an administrator because I want to work with teachers and families to create schools with high levels of trust, engagement and positive student outcomes. I believe that meaningful relationships with students, their families, and their communities as well as high-quality, engaging, standards-aligned lessons are the most crucial building blocks to school success.
Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with family and friends as well as giving back to the community through volunteering at my church. My hobbies include real estate, cooking/baking, and playing board games. I also love to travel! My favorite places include Nags Head, NC, Washington, DC, Anchorage, AK, and Uganda, Africa. While in Anchorage & Uganda, I had the opportunity to work in schools and children's homes. These experiences helped to shape who I am as both a person, teacher, and educational leader.
