Standard 6 - External Development Leadership
A principal will design structures and processes that result in community engagement, support, and ownership. Acknowledging that schools no longer reflect but, in fact, build community, the leader proactively creates with staff, opportunities for parents/guardians, community and business representatives to participate as “stockholders” in the school such that continued investment of resources and good will are not left to chance.
Element VIa. Parent and Community Involvement and Outreach: The principal designs structures and processes which result in parent and community engagement, support and ownership for the school.
Together with our Community Family Outreach Specialist, I worked to ensure that our community partners were strong presences within our school. We created a tutoring/mentoring program which was staffed competently by volunteers from local churches and organizations. Additionally, over 40 of our staff members were "adopted" by volunteers from the Summit Church in Durham. The volunteers support staff members by providing teachers with both tangible gifts such as gift cards and classroom supplies, as well as emotional support through kind words and emails.
Element VIb. Federal, State and District Mandates: The principal designs protocols and processes in order to comply with federal, state, and district mandates.
At Bethesda, I serve as the Read to Achieve Coordinator (RTA), 504 Chairperson, and Testing Coordinator. In these roles, I create a variety of systems, protocols, and policies that comply with federal, state, and district policy. As part of my work for RTA, I will be coordinating the summer camp and have started the process of informing parents of eligible students through a variety of parent contacts. As 504 Chairperson, I am currently working to update student files and systems to ensure that all of our students are receiving the support that they need. As the Testing Coordinator, I create schedules, systems, training, and a variety of other resources to ensure that our testing windows run smoothly.
